A Variani belt avoids all of that by construction. It is cut from one thick piece of full-grain Italian leather, the strongest outer layer of the hide, and finished by hand. It will darken and soften with wear, which is exactly what good leather is supposed to do.
Full-grain leather handles moisture; dry it slowly and condition. Layers of bonded leather separate when wet.
Wipe salt off with a damp cloth. The stainless buckle does not corrode the way plated hardware does.

Confused by labels that all say leather? Cut a hide open and the difference is plain: only the top layer is worth a designer belt.
The outermost layer, kept exactly as nature made it. Dense, strong and the only grade that ages into a real patina.
The natural surface is buffed away and replaced with spray and an embossed grain. Uniform to look at, but the strength went with the sanding.
Cut from deeper in the hide, then coated and pressed to resemble the top. Despite the name, it is the lowest grade, and it usually peels once the coating wears.
Shredded offcuts held together with glue, sometimes over a filler. It is the belt most likely to fall apart first.

Yes. Full-grain is the top 1 to 2 percent of the hide with its natural surface intact, the strongest and most attractive layer. Genuine leather, despite the name, is the lowest grade: a lower split usually painted to look like the top, so it tends to peel and crack. Full-grain instead darkens into a patina over the years.
Usually a coating of paint or plastic sitting on top of low-grade or bonded leather. That coating cannot bend the way leather does, so it cracks at the buckle fold and peels at the edges. New Brunswick winters, with their freeze-thaw swings and road salt, make that happen faster.
Measure a belt you already like, from where the leather meets the buckle to your most-used hole, or go by your usual trouser waist size. Every even size from 26 to 58 is available. If you fall between sizes, go one larger.

Wipe off salt, dirt and sweat with a lightly damp cloth, then let it dry at room temperature away from heaters or wood stoves. Condition the leather once or twice a year. Store it hanging or loosely coiled, and let a frozen belt warm up before you bend it hard.
