Bian works from an atelier at 1231 Pacific Blvd., a few minutes from the False Creek seawall, cutting each strap by hand from full-grain aniline leather he chooses himself in Santa Croce, Tuscany. He trained in fashion in London and Milan, dressed celebrities for black-tie events, then spent years in mechanical engineering and metalworking, and all of it shows up in one belt.
The atelier is a workroom, not a showroom, so there is no counter to walk up to. You order online or message Bian, and the belt reaches you by free tracked post like it would anywhere else in Canada. The shortcuts that fail first in a wet coastal city
Most belts that give out here were never really leather all the way through. Each failure below comes from a corner someone cut, and each one is a corner Bian refuses to cut.
My belt looked great for a few months and now the finish is flaking off.
The shortcut
A painted or plastic topcoat hides cheap split leather underneath, and Vancouver's long wet season works water in behind it. Once it gets under the coating, every walk from the SkyTrain in the rain lifts a little more.
The Variani way
A Variani strap has no painted coating at all. It is full-grain aniline leather, so the surface you see is the hide itself and there is nothing on top to peel.
The edge has opened and I can see the belt is two thin layers glued together.
The shortcut
Gluing layers around a filler core is a cheap way to make a strap look thick. Damp air and constant bending at the hip break that glue line down from the tip backwards.
The Variani way
Each Variani belt is cut from one single piece of thick cowhide, with no bonded layers and no cardboard filler. The edges are hand-burnished with natural beeswax, roughly fifteen minutes of work per belt.
The buckle has gone dull and there is grey metal showing through.
The shortcut
Most buckles are plated zinc alloy, a thin shiny skin over soft metal. Salt air along the seawall and wet coats rubbing against it strip that skin surprisingly fast.

Variani buckles are solid stainless steel in 316L, the alloy family used in medical implants. There is no plating to wear through, so it looks the same underneath as it does on top.

The tag said genuine leather, so why does it look like plastic after a year?
The shortcut
Genuine leather is a real grade in the trade, and it is the lowest one: split leather that has been painted and stamped with a fake grain. The words on the label are true and still tell you almost nothing.
The Variani way
Bian uses only full-grain, the top 1-2% of the hide, bought in person from the same famous Italian tannery for about 30 years. You can see the natural grain, and it deepens with wear instead of wearing away.
I seem to buy a new belt every year and I am tired of it.
The shortcut
A cheap belt is designed around a short life, so the saving at the till disappears by the third replacement. It also means another dead belt in the bin.

Cut a belt in half and the grade of leather is obvious. Here is what each label on a Vancouver shop tag really means.

Full-grain
The top layer of the hide with its natural surface left intact, the strongest and most honest leather there is. This is the only grade Bian cuts at the atelier.

The same top layer, but sanded to remove marks, sprayed with colour and pressed with an artificial grain. It looks tidy at first and then wears rather than ages.

A lower split of the hide with a painted surface and a stamped pattern. It is leather in name, and it tends to crack and peel in the first year or two.

Bonded leather
Scraps of leather shredded, mixed with glue and pressed into a sheet, sometimes wrapped around a filler. It falls apart at the first fold that gets any real use.

Darker patches where water soaked in, sometimes a faint line as it dries.
Blot it with a cloth and let it dry at room temperature, well away from the baseboard heater or radiator.

The leather feeling a little flat or dry at the fold behind the buckle.
Condition it once or twice a year, and store it hanging or loosely coiled rather than crushed in a drawer.
