Vancouver is where every Variani belt begins. Bian works from an atelier at 1231 Pacific Blvd., a few minutes from the False Creek seawall, cutting each strap by hand from full-grain aniline leather he chooses himself in Santa Croce, Tuscany. He trained in fashion in London and Milan, dressed celebrities for black-tie events, then spent years in mechanical engineering and metalworking, and all of it shows up in one belt.

Cut a belt in half and the grade of leather is obvious. Here is what each label on a Vancouver shop tag really means.
The top layer of the hide with its natural surface left intact, the strongest and most honest leather there is. This is the only grade Bian cuts at the atelier.
The same top layer, but sanded to remove marks, sprayed with colour and pressed with an artificial grain. It looks tidy at first and then wears rather than ages.
A lower split of the hide with a painted surface and a stamped pattern. It is leather in name, and it tends to crack and peel in the first year or two.
Scraps of leather shredded, mixed with glue and pressed into a sheet, sometimes wrapped around a filler. It falls apart at the first fold that gets any real use.

Yes. Full-grain aniline leather has no painted coating for water to creep under, so the usual peeling does not happen. Let it dry naturally after a soaking and condition it once or twice a year.
