The outer one or two percent of the hide with the natural surface left whole. Dense, breathable and able to build a patina, it is the only grade Bian uses.
The natural surface is sanded away, then sprayed and often pressed with an imitation grain. Smooth at first, it wears badly at the bends.
A marketing term that is actually the bottom grade: a lower split, painted and stamped to pass for grain. The name reassures; the belt peels.
Scraps shredded, glued and rolled flat, sometimes over a filler core. The least durable of all and the first to come apart.

Full-grain is the top one or two percent of the hide with the natural surface kept whole, the strongest and finest grade. Genuine leather is usually a lower split that has been painted and stamped to look like grain. We use only full-grain aniline Italian leather, in one solid piece.
Peeling happens when a painted or plastic coating separates from split or bonded leather beneath it. Cracking comes from sanded surfaces drying out, and Alberta winters with indoor heating are very dry. A one-piece full-grain strap with no coating avoids both.
