Manitoba winters are some of the coldest of any major Canadian city, and cold is exactly what exposes a poor belt. Bonded and "genuine" leather belts are finished with a painted polyurethane layer that turns brittle below freezing, so they crack along the fold and around the holes the first time you buckle up at the door.
In summer the same belts go soft and sticky. Full-grain leather keeps the natural surface of the hide, with its fibres intact, so it flexes in the cold and breathes in the heat. It does not peel, because there is nothing on top of it to peel.
Condition before winter and let a cold belt warm up indoors before bending it hard. That is all full-grain leather needs.

The grade on a belt is really a description of which layer you bought. Here is the difference, top to bottom.
The top one or two percent of the hide with its natural surface untouched. The strongest, finest layer, and the one that deepens into patina.
Sanded to remove blemishes, then sprayed and frequently stamped with an artificial grain. Neat on day one, weak where it bends.
The name sounds like a promise but it marks the lowest grade: a lower split painted and printed to look like grain. Often it is closer to coated plastic than to good leather.
Leather scraps ground up, mixed with glue and pressed flat, sometimes around a filler core. It is the most likely to peel and split.

Top-grain is sanded and sprayed, genuine leather is usually a painted lower split, and bonded leather is glued-together scraps. Every Variani belt is 100% full-grain aniline Italian leather.
Peeling comes from a painted or plastic coating separating from weaker leather underneath, and cracking comes from sanded surfaces losing their strength. In Manitoba, freeze-thaw cycles and dry furnace air speed both up. A solid, uncoated full-grain strap has neither weakness.

Wipe away slush, grit and sweat with a lightly damp cloth, then let the belt dry at room temperature, away from heaters and vents. Condition it once or twice a year and store it hanging or loosely coiled. If it has been out in the cold, let it warm up before you bend it hard.
