Nova Scotia is surrounded by the sea, and salt air is hard on metal. Most belt buckles are zinc alloy with a thin plating on top; near the ocean that plating pits, bubbles and flakes to reveal dull grey metal underneath. A Variani buckle is solid stainless steel all the way through, so there is no plating to lose.
Damp is the other enemy. Bonded leather is layers of scrap held together with glue, and moisture works its way into those glue lines until the belt splits along its edge. A full-grain belt is one continuous piece of hide, so it has no layers to come apart.
Solid stainless steel resists corrosion; plated buckles do not. Wipe salt spray off leather with a damp cloth and let it dry naturally.
Full-grain leather can get wet and recover. Dry it slowly at room temperature, then condition.

Full-grain is the untouched top of the hide, roughly the top 1 to 2 percent, and the strongest part of it. Genuine leather is actually the lowest grade: a lower split that is painted to look like the top. Bonded leather is ground scraps glued together. Only full-grain develops a patina instead of peeling.
They are usually low-grade leather hidden under paint or a plastic finish, which is a shortcut to make them look richer. That finish does not flex like leather, so it cracks at the fold and lifts at the edges. Damp Nova Scotia weather and winter salt speed that up.
