What a Quebec winter does to a cheap belt

Montreal sidewalks stay salted for months, and the cold in Quebec City arrives early and stays late. Behind each failure below is a shortcut, and Bian, a designer who dresses the belt as carefully as the suit, will not take it.

The shortcut
Leather loses flexibility as it gets colder, and Quebec City in February is properly cold. A strap whose face is paint rather than real grain can crack when you force it at that temperature.
The Variani way
A Variani belt will stiffen too; that is honest leather behaviour. Because it is 100% solid, real, thick cowhide with an uncoated grain, it softens again once you are inside, as long as you give it a few minutes before cinching it hard.

Why is it cracking where it folds at the buckle?

The shortcut
Every time you sit down on the metro or climb one of the outdoor staircases on the Plateau, the strap bends at the same spot. Sanding away the grain to hide flaws is a shortcut, and it removes the fibres that should carry that bend.
The Variani way
We leave the grain whole on every strap. The crease deepens and softens with the years, which is how a luxury belt is supposed to age.

The shortcut
A sprayed colour coat or a thin plastic film is the quick way to make poor leather look finished. Snowmelt, dry indoor heat and summer humidity take turns loosening it.

There is no top coat on our leather to lift. We use aniline full-grain, where the natural surface is the finish, so it wears in rather than wearing off.

Plated zinc buckles carry only a thin skin of shiny metal, a finish chosen for price rather than for years. Salt and calcium from the sidewalks get onto gloves and hands, and that skin wears through at the edges.
The Variani way
Every buckle is solid 316L stainless steel, so a scratch shows the same metal underneath. On some models it is held by stainless Chicago screws and comes off by hand; Bian's training in mechanical engineering and metalworking shows in details like that.

How do I know it's actually real leather?

The shortcut
Words like 'genuine' or 'Italian leather' on a tag can hide the very lowest grades. Genuine leather is often just a shredded base, painted and pressed with a fake grain, and at a glance it passes, even in a good shop.
The Variani way
Our leather is 100% full-grain aniline from Santa Croce, Tuscany, where Bian has chosen hides in person for about 30 years and rejects most of what he sees. Nothing is bonded, filled or coated.

Cheap plated alloys can irritate skin, especially once the plating wears through and sweat reaches the base metal. It tends to flare up in a hot, humid Montreal summer.

Leather offcuts shredded, mixed with glue and rolled into sheets, sometimes over a filler core. It resembles leather only until it starts to split.

Caring for leather through a Quebec winter

Sidewalk salt leaves white rings if it dries on leather, so wipe it off the same day. The rest is a little conditioner once or twice a year.

A coating over low-grade leather is the usual cause, and it is there because it is cheap. Freeze and thaw, salty slush and dry indoor heat all stress that coating until it flakes, and sanded leather tends to crack at the fold near the buckle. Full-grain aniline leather has no coating to peel off.
