Leather is graded by how deep in the hide it was cut. The top layer is the rarest and the strongest, and it is the only one Bian works with.
The outermost 1-2% of the hide with its natural surface left untouched. Nothing is taken away, so it keeps full strength and mellows into a patina.
Cut from the top as well, then buffed, sprayed and often stamped with an artificial grain. Neat at first, weaker where it bends.
A split from lower in the hide, frequently painted and embossed until it looks like something better. Genuine leather is a marketing word for the bottom grade, and too often it means fake leather.
Shredded scraps glued into a sheet, sometimes over a filler. The quickest to peel and split.
Hold the belt for a minute and it will tell you what the label leaves out.

A damp cloth, a slow dry and a little conditioner once or twice a year is nearly all it needs. It will darken as you wear it, and it is meant to.

Full-grain is the top of the hide with its surface left whole, so it keeps all its natural strength. Top-grain has been sanded and refinished, losing some of that strength. Genuine leather is the lowest grade, usually a painted base with a pressed grain, which is why genuine so often means fake. Every Variani belt is full-grain: 100% solid, real, thick cowhide.
Peeling is a painted or plastic coat letting go of low-grade leather once rain, sweat or road salt get under it. Cracking starts at the fold behind the buckle, where sanded leather has lost its strongest fibres. Our belts are uncoated and cut from one piece of full-grain hide, so neither shortcut is there to fail.
