A Winnipeg belt does a hard job. It gets buckled over long johns in the dark at seven in the morning, bent stiff at a frozen bus shelter, then dried out all afternoon by forced-air heat. Painted belts and plated buckles were never meant for that, and most of them show it inside one winter.
Bian Variani makes each belt himself, one at a time, from Italian full-grain hides he has chosen in person for about 30 years. Every one of these failures starts with a corner someone cut to sell a cheaper belt. Here is what goes wrong on the prairie and what we do instead.

The shortcut
All leather firms up in real cold, and a Winnipeg wind chill takes it further than most places in the country. Belts with a sprayed finish are the ones that craze and crack when bent frozen.

That fold is bent every single day, and dry indoor heat pulls moisture out of the leather all season. Sanded, corrected leather has lost its strongest layer, so it breaks there first.

We leave the natural grain intact, the top 1-2% of the hide. It bends at that fold for decades and darkens into a patina instead of opening up.

Road salt and wet mitts get onto everything from November to April. Plated zinc only has a thin skin of finish, and once that wears through, the cheap metal corrodes.

Bian does not use plating at all. Every buckle is solid stainless steel, so there is no finish to wear through and nothing underneath to rust.

It usually is paint, or a PU layer over a low split. Snow melting on your parka and drying on the strap loosens that coating a little more each day.

Our leather is dyed through, not painted over. There is no top layer sitting on the surface waiting to lift.

Bonded and layered belts are thin sheets glued together, sometimes around a filler core. Freeze and thaw work at that glue line until it lets go.

Each Variani strap is cut from one single piece of thick cowhide. There is no glue line to fail, and the edges are burnished by hand with beeswax.

What the word leather hides
Four grades can all be sold as leather. Only one of them is the whole, untouched surface of the hide.

Full-grain
The outer layer of the hide left exactly as it grew, fibres tight and intact. It is the strongest cut, and the only one Bian uses.

Top-grain (corrected)
The same layer with its surface sanded off, then sprayed and pressed with a fake grain. Neater looking in the store, weaker in a Winnipeg winter.

Wipe it with a lightly damp cloth the same day and let it dry at room temperature, never on a heat register.
Deep cold
A strap that feels rigid when you come in from outside.
Give it a few minutes indoors before bending it hard. The stiffness passes as it warms.
Dry furnace air
A slightly dull, thirsty look by late winter.
Condition it once or twice a year, spring being a good moment, and store it hanging or loosely coiled.
