The same top layer, but sanded to remove marks and then sprayed and embossed with an artificial grain. It looks tidy in the shop and loses its surface with use.
A lower split of the hide, painted and stamped to look like the real thing. This is the belt that cracks along the holes and peels at the fold.
Scraps shredded and glued back together, sometimes around a filler core. Bend it a few hundred times and it comes apart in layers.

Salt damages thin, painted belts quickly, but thick full-grain leather holds up well with a little care. Wipe salt marks with a lightly damp cloth and dry the belt at room temperature, away from heaters.
