Leather has its own version of plated metal. Here are the four grades, from the solid stuff to the imitation.

Full-grain
The top layer of the hide, whole and untouched, with its densest fibres intact. It is the solid material of the leather world and all we use.

Real leather with the surface ground off and a synthetic finish laid over it. Think of it as leather with a plating.
