The shortcut
Painted or corrected leather has a stiff surface that cannot flex forever, and long drives bend it at the same spot hundreds of times a week. The finish breaks first and the fibres behind it follow.
The Variani way
Full-grain leather keeps the hide's natural surface, so it flexes and softens with use instead of breaking. A new Variani belt is firmer for the first few weeks, then settles into your shape.
