Why belts do not last in Brampton, and how ours do
When a belt fails, it is almost always because someone saved money in the making. Here are the shortcuts we refuse.

The shortcut
Bonded and layered straps are glued together, and bending and lifting all day pulls the layers apart. The edge opens first.
The Variani way
Every Variani strap is one solid piece of thick cowhide with a hand-burnished edge. There are no layers to separate.
The hole I use is stretched long and starting to tear.

A thin strap under a heavy load stretches at the prong, especially when you carry tools or a phone on the belt. Soon the hole tears toward the tip.

We use heavyweight full-grain leather, with 10 oz straps on models like #VAR012. The dense surface keeps the hole round.

Cheap buckles are soft cast alloy with a thin plating. Knocks on the job bend them, and the plating chips.

It said genuine leather, but it was peeling like plastic.

Genuine leather is the lowest real grade, often a split with a plastic coating pressed with a fake grain. That coating is what peels.

The strong outer surface of the hide, kept whole and never sanded. It takes hard use, darkens beautifully and is the only grade we cut.

Top-grain (corrected)
A hide with its natural surface buffed away and a manufactured one sprayed back. The strength lost in sanding does not come back.

An inner layer painted to look presentable. It is real leather technically, but it is the lowest grade and it peels.

Wipe it with a lightly damp cloth and let it dry naturally at room temperature.

A belt that has been coiled tightly may hold a curve.
