Halifax weather comes off the Atlantic. Fog rolls up the harbour, rain arrives sideways, and winter swings between snow, sleet and thaw, sometimes in one afternoon. Add the salt in the air near the water, and a cheap belt with a plated buckle does not stand much of a chance.
Bian Variani refuses the shortcuts that fail here. No plating, only solid stainless steel. Why belts fail in Halifax, and how ours do not

Glued layers and filler cores absorb moisture and swell unevenly. Damp coastal air and freeze-thaw weaken the glue line until it gives.

Wet leather dried quickly on a radiator loses its oils, and corrected leather has no natural grain to fall back on. The fold behind the buckle breaks first.

Full-grain keeps its strong outer layer. Let it dry slowly at room temperature, condition it now and then, and it will flex for decades.

Many plated alloys contain nickel, and damp skin under a raincoat makes the reaction worse. The plating wears thin exactly where the buckle touches you.

In a damp city, the difference between grades shows up fast. Here is what each one actually is.

Full-grain
Untouched outer hide with its natural fibre and pores. It handles moisture, dries back well and ages into a rich patina.

Top-grain (corrected)
Sanded smooth, then sealed with a finish and a pressed pattern. That coating is what cracks when it gets wet and dries over and over.

Condition once or twice a year and store it hanging or loosely coiled where air can move.
