Daily life in the capital, and what it does to leather
Tired of a belt that cracks the first time you climb the Côte de la Montagne in January? Cheap belts are built from thin, glued layers under a painted face, and the capital's cold and snow find the weak point quickly. By the time the Carnaval ice sculptures are going up, the fold behind the buckle has usually given out.
Bian Variani does not build belts that way. He chooses each hide himself at an Italian tannery he has bought from in person for about 30 years, cuts every strap from one solid piece, and fits it with a buckle of solid stainless steel. Getting from Saint-Roch up to the Haute-Ville means stairs, slopes and a lot of bending at the waist. Every step flexes the strap right behind the buckle. A single-piece strap has no glued layers there to separate.

Corrected and split leathers have lost their strongest fibres, and deep cold makes what is left brittle. Bend it on an icy morning on the way up to the Haute-Ville and it splits along the fold.

All leather stiffens in real cold, and thin, dried-out belts can crack when they do. Coatings on cheap belts turn brittle even faster.

Ours will stiffen a little too, and we would rather say so. It softens again indoors, and conditioning it once or twice a year keeps it supple through the whole winter.

Some belts are two thin skins glued around a filler core, and wet snow gets into the edge. The glue gives and the layers separate.

How do I know what I am actually buying?
The shortcut
Stamped grain and a label saying genuine leather can hide a painted split underneath. From the front, most people cannot tell.

Look at the edge: ours is solid leather all the way through, with no paint line and no glue line. Full-grain aniline leather also has natural variations in the grain that a stamp cannot copy.
