Two belts can look the same on a shelf and be completely different inside. The difference is the grade.
The hide's natural top layer, whole and unsanded. It is the most durable leather and the only one that ages into a real patina.
The same top layer after its surface has been ground away and replaced with a sprayed finish and an imitation grain. It wears down to a dull layer underneath.
A lower, looser split, painted and pressed with a pattern. Its paint is what peels in damp weather.
Leather dust and scraps bound together with glue. It separates in layers once it has been flexed and soaked a few times.
