Kelowna has proper seasons. Summers in the Okanagan are hot and dry, with days on the lake, patios along Bernard Avenue and long evenings at the wineries in the Mission and Lake Country. Winter brings snow to the valley and skiing at Big White, and the change between the two is bigger than anything Vancouver sees.

July and August in Kelowna are hot, dry and sunny. Painted leather dries out and cracks in that heat, while full-grain simply deepens in colour, which is part of its charm.

Heat, cold and the belts that cannot handle both
A big swing between summer and winter shows up every shortcut in a cheap belt. Here are the ones that fail first in the Okanagan.
My belt has gone dry and cracked across the surface after one summer.
The shortcut
Corrected and painted leathers rely on a sprayed surface that bakes and hardens in dry heat. Once it hardens, every bend opens a new crack.
The Variani way
Full-grain aniline leather keeps the hide's own surface, which flexes and develops patina instead of cracking. Condition it once or twice a year and it stays supple for decades.
In January my belt feels like a board and the coating has started to split.
The shortcut
Plastic-coated leather turns brittle in freezing temperatures, and the coating cannot bend the way the leather beneath it does. It breaks at the fold behind the buckle.

Coloured belts are often painted rather than dyed, so friction and sun wear the colour off in patches. Underneath is pale, low-grade leather.

Variani colours are in the leather itself, not painted on top. On #VAR021 slate blue the dye goes right through the edge, so it never shows a pale core.
I paid good money for a genuine leather belt and it still fell apart.

Genuine leather is the trade's lowest real grade, a painted split with a stamped grain. The label is legal and misleading.
The Variani way
Bian uses only full-grain, the top 1-2% of the hide, chosen in person in Italy from a tannery he has worked with for about 30 years. It is 100% solid, real, thick cowhide.

Leather with its natural outer surface intact, fibres tight and unbroken. It resists drying and cracking far better than the others and is the only grade Bian uses.

Top leather sanded to remove the natural surface, then coated and embossed. That sprayed layer is what bakes and cracks in dry heat.
