What a Sudbury year does to a belt
In Greater Sudbury a belt does not get an easy life. The natural surface has been sanded off and replaced with a sprayed finish. In deep cold that finish is the first thing to crack.

Full-grain leather stiffens in deep cold, as all leather does, but its fibres stay whole, so it does not crack the way painted belts do. Let a frozen belt warm up for a few minutes before bending it hard.
