Tanners have always graded hides. Here is what each grade means for the belt you wear.

Full-grain
The strongest layer, with the surface a hide grew and nothing taken away. A tanner's best, and the only leather we use.

Top-grain (corrected)
A hide whose surface has been buffed off and replaced with a coating and a stamped pattern. It trades strength for a uniform look.

A lower split, painted and printed with fake grain. It is the lowest grade that can legally be called leather.
